Spellcaster, by George Bachman

Spellcaster - George Bachman

In this fantasy set in an alternate fin-de-siècle England, a young girl on the eve of her societal debut struggles with life-threatening psychic visions. The only occultist of the many she consults who can help her won't do so unless the young girl convinces her sister to marry the occultist's beau so that the two of them can share the considerable dowry. A blend of Austen, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, and Edith Wharton, it's enjoyable and goes into the most unexpected places, from the Victorian occult underground to the parlors of upper society to graveyards and rituals better left alone. 4/5 stars
